12th Air Force (AFSOUTH) FACT SHEET Mission: 12th Air Force, Air Forces Southern (AFSOUTH) is the Air Force component command to U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM). AFSOUTH conducts security cooperation activities and provides air, space, and cyberspace capabilities throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. In support of USSOUTHCOM, AFSOUTH deters aggression, defeats threats, rapidly responds to crises, and works with allied and partner nations to build regional capacity and ensure a secure, free, and prosperous Western Hemisphere. Forces and Organ: The U.S. Air Force’s Twelfth Air Force is the air component for USSOUTHCOM. Effective April 10, 2026, AFSOUTH's status changed from a Major Command of the United States Air Force to a subordinate unit of the Air Combat Command (ACC) Major Command, giving it a broader warfighting and strategic role in preparing and presenting airpower effects in the USSOUTHCOM area.
